Ten Quick Questions
Jim started this, in case blame needs to be assigned.
Who are you?
Who’s askin’?
I am a beachball on the river of life.
I am the “fun” in “malfunction.”
I am the puff of wind in your ear just before some Willie inserts a wet finger.

Passing Thoughts
A few passing thoughts I had over the past few days (not to be confused with “passing gas,” although of approximately equal value):
- Perverse as it may seem, I’m actually somewhat happy there’s major news on Wall Street. Because that means there’s at least a slim chance that for a fews days, our R

Random Local Linkage
While January has been marginally less busy than last month was, I’ve still been letting you down here, Dear Reader. So here’s a few locally related things that caught my eye/ear over the weekend.
My state government and my federal government are fighting over “Real ID,” with the end result being that come next May, they say I won’t be able to get on a plane or enter a federal building. On top of that, the feds think I’m (nearly) too old to be dangerous:

December Time Bankruptcy
I’m completely overwhelmed with work, booked solid through year end. I came down with a stomach virus for a couple of days, which put me even further behind. My kitties ate my keyboard. The server on which this site resides has been ssssoooo sloooowwwww for sssssooooo lllooonnngg that my traffic has dropped by half in the past few weeks (this is supposed to be fixed after Wednesday).

More Is Not Always Good
Here in America, the Land Of Big Boxes, these boxes often have a colorful band around the top. This band acts like a volume marker, and the bold shouting text within it says things like “20% More For Free!”
How can this not be a Good Thing?
Well, when you’re buying a 21 pound box of cat litter. With a flimsy “handle” on top that is delicately attenuated to bear the strain of, oh, about 21.5 pounds. But when you add in that “Four More Pounds For Free,” you get a shelf full of boxes with broken handles that no one wants to drag out of the store like a cinder block on a four inch rope.

Swirling Time Vortexes Reid Does Not Get Sucked Into
(1) Second Life. This one takes all the time I’ve got.
(2) American Idol. Please, spare me.
(3) Any TV show containing the letters CSI or NCIS, the word Desperate, or Donald Trump, in any form, even referential.

Scarey AstroLove or Scared Straight?
Susan came home yesterday after a busy day at work, and asked me what was going on in the world. I told her I was having a hard time deciding which story was more entertaining: the Diapered AstroNut or the Sexually Healed Preacher.
I’m still not sure. But I’m thankful for days that bring such choices.
First, the Diapered AstroNut. I hesitate to call her that, but it seems accurate from what is known at this point. It’s the dichotomy here that is so jarring to me. All other things being equal, the average person has a better chance of being a highly paid professional sports player, or a rock star, than an astronaut. This woman went through an extreme selection process, intense training, and performed ably. One would think such a person could be described as beyond competent.

Left Lane Follies
I know that there’s always been Left Lane Hogs, as long as theres been four lane highways. But lately I’ve observed an explosion of this related to six lane configurations.
I first came to this conclusion while driving GA 400, a local toll road that is six to eight lanes on the portion I travel most. But this weekend when travelling back and forth to see Mom in Mississippi, I saw the same behavior in six lane stretches. So it’s my new rule.

The ISG, DNC, RNC, APD, and Busy Me
It’s become the familiar ritual around here this year. I post to say how busy I’ve been (I spent two hours on the road yesterday, yet never got outside the I-285 perimeter of Atlanta … to do ten minutes of photography). I then proceed to say short snarky things about miscellaneous news items I’ve been too busy to write about here.
One change is that, while I used to find time to read various sites and news articles but couldn’t find time to write about them here, I now find myself short even on time to read about what’s going on. I open up a dozen tabs with pages I want to read, but by day’s end few have actually been consumed. I’ve been so busy that I may have Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on TV, but my focus is such that I don’t even really absorb their unique delivery of the day’s events.
Yeah, it’s that bad. But this is the web, where we don’t let a mere lack of knowledge inhibit our whining and opining.

Sorriness In Many Varieties
I guess this is the where I’m supposed say I’m sorry that I haven’t written much of anything here the past two weeks. But … I’m not particularly sorry (well, The Wife would argue there are times that I am particularly sorry, but that’s another matter), and you’ve been just fine without me, haven’t you? Good. Glad we got that out of the way.
I’ve been busy working on web sites and photos for other people, and you know how the cobbler’s children have no shoes, etcetera, etcetera. Plus, Mom was in town for the week of Thanksgiving, there were many pictures to be taken of Princess Caroli (once she grows up to be rich and/or famous, she’s going to get a huge invoice), all followed by tryptophan induced lethargy. [urp]
So … what else is going on?

And, We're Back...
I’m back in Atlanta (have been since late Tuesday), I’m posting this from my formerly dead primary computer, and I’m picking up my formerly dead but soon repaired truck on Monday. Is that a black cloud clearing? No, no, don’t look up ... we might jinx it. In addition to updates, I have still more thoughts and observations from the road. And a small rant or three. In other words, even in the midst of chaos, I must empty my head. It helps to narrow down where that buzzing sound is coming from…

More Thoughts And Observations From The Road
I’m still in Mississippi, as I have been for 11 of the past 16 days. My Dad has been in and out of ICU three times now, but we’re hoping the coming week will bring progress in our plan to “get his life back.” What time I’ve had at the computer has been devoted to taking care of client work, and communicating with my most understanding wife, 300 miles away. But as always, there’s other unrelated things going on that create reactions which end up here.

Thoughts and Observations While Travelling
I’m typing this on a laptop while sitting at a McDonalds in Meridian, Mississippi. Meridian ain’t got no Starbucks, and if you want wireless access, you have four choices that aren’t hotels … and three of them are McDonalds. Not that any of the McDonalds employees know squat about it. In fact, they insisted they don’t have it. So I opened the laptop, logged onto Wayport’s WiFi for free, and am surfing using the access they claim they don’t have. The McNet seems to work OK, and the coffee’s hot…

Caroli and Tuesday Miscellany
It’s another busy week, so I thought I’d dump some links and pictures on you to keep you busy. Content may be a bit lacking this week.

Mid-Week Miscellany
It’s time for another random batch of links and demi-snarky commentary.

Friday Miscellany
I’ve been quiet this week, other than a bunch of links and quotes. IT was for the best for all concerned. I vented Monday in an ugly manner, and haven’t really had anything prettier to say since then. But I hear that the world has continued turning, and there may be other things to look at to give our scarred retinas a break from the 24-7 horror and blame. Let’s give it a shot.

It’s yet another collection of random thoughts and links, pasted together while watching Monday Morning Mediots on TV.

Weekend Miscellany
In terms of writing for this site, I’ve been feeling a bit blocked lately. I’d ramped up an outline for an article about recent developments in Iraq. But then I thought … “why bother?” It won’t change a thing, and won’t even make me feel better. Politics? Still quite content upholding my vow, thank you very much. But when I posted a bunch of links under the title “Mid Week Miscellany” last week, I saw via MyBlogLog.com that you folks went click crazy. By a factor of about 5. Since people seemed to like it, I’m happy to fill this otherwise empty space with another round. So, in no particular order…

Mid Week Miscellany
August is a traditionally slow time. Too little news, too much heat. The Shuttle is safely back, the President’s vacationing at the ranch, and when the runaway bride mows the lawn, it’s news. It’s slow. So let’s poke around the blogs in these Digital Dog Days and see what we find.
