I'm 49, Not Retired
In the mail yesterday, I got something that, at first, I thought was misdelivered. The envelope said it was from the AARP and that my card was enclosed.
Couldn’t be for me, I’m nowhere near retirement age, I work for a living.
But it was indeed correctly addressed to me, and the AARP was soliciting this 49 year old to join. Reading on, I see they now take people as young as 50, and I guess I’m in some database somewhere that shows I’m turning 50 this year.

The Death Of Emulsion and Redefining of Instant
Not that terribly long ago, to complete an advertising photography shoot, you required vendors for specific supplies and support. Typically, you might buy some Kodak EPR film stock in a large format (120mm, 4×5, 8×10), along with a similarly large format of Polaroid (Type 669, Type 55, Type 59), to allow for “instant” viewing on the set.

Losers Quit
As this year began, the Falcons not only had one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, they also had a damn fine backup quarterback, and they claimed they’d also finally hired the man to coach them, one Bobby Petrino.
On Monday, that “top quarterback” stood before a judge in a black and white jumpsuit and got sentenced to 23 months in jail, their damn fine backup is starting for Houston, and viewers who tuned in for prime time football got sentenced to watching yet another sorry performance by the puddle of misery the Falcons have become on their way to a 3-10 record.

New Hardware + New Software = Busy + Happy
I’ve had the new computer a little over a month, and I told you it’s Not Your Daddy’s Dell, as well as wrote about loading it up with My Essential Software, 2007. And since then, judging by this site, I went away for a while.

Earthlink, Come In From The Rain
You might recall me whining about Earthlink overcharging me by a factor of 100 for something called “USF Fee Recovery.” Thus, I read the following with interest last month:
Under pressure from the Federal Communications Commission, BellSouth said Friday that it will stop collecting a $2.97 per month regulatory fee from its high-speed Internet customers.

Circuit City and Rebate Pricing
[The following is a letter composed to be sent to Circuit City, knowing full well it won’t change a thing. But I have a feeling it’s a common complaint, so I’m also posting it here.]

Cash Struggle Continues for Clinton, Filings Show — These presidential campaigns are the largest organizations with the biggest budgets with the most important goal either of these people have ever led. It’s fair to judge them on the results: “Mr. Obama is spending 75 cents for every dollar he is taking in; Mrs. Clinton is spending $1.10,” and has about $10 million in debt compared to Obama’s $660,000.
The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: Monkey Boy’s three-legged race — “Ballmer said he loved when his rivals merged, because whenever the also-rans in any market start teaming up they might as well be waving a white flag. Because it’s over. You’ve beaten them. You’ve driven them to despair. They haven’t been able to beat you on their own; there’s no way they’ll do it together.”
“In times of rapid change, experience is your worst enemy.” J. Paul Getty
“The implication of course is that virtually every individual who owns both a CD and a computer — and thus has likely copied that CD to the computer — can be subject to a lawsuit by the recording industry. Imagine the revenue potential from suing hundreds of millions of people, i.e. suing every one of your customers. Is it possible for an industry to develop a business model based entirely on litigation?” Scott Karp
Joyent switches to Dell servers solely because Sun makes theirs so hard to buy — “We’ve talked with all sorts of Sun sales people. They put us into a special group for internet companies. We have made personal appeals to senior executives at Sun (that generally are answered … thanks for that). We’ve passed out bottles of 18-year old scotch. But the fact remains: every time Joyent engages Sun sales, they can’t really sell me something.”
“Just look at that Forbes 400. Takes a billion three to get on the Forbes 400 this year. And the aggregate wealth is just staggering. And those people are paying less percentage of their total income to the federal government than their receptionists are [...] I’ll bet a million dollars against any member of the Forbes 400 who challenges — me that the average for the Forbes 400 will be less than the average of their receptionists.” Warren Buffet
Casualties of the NFL — “An exhaustive investigation — including interviews with dozens of injured vets, evaluations of their medical charts and reports from doctors selected by the league, and conversations with critics of the Players Association in the medical and legal community — reveals a pattern of conduct by the NFLPA that denies former players the money they need and to which their injuries should entitle them.”
Apple Says Your Cash Ain’t Nothin’ But Trash — “Apple no longer accepts cash for iPhone purchases…” Well, that’s insanely innovative. A US based company refuses to accept what it says on my greenbacks, “This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private.” Soon we’ll probably hear about a new promotion for something like “Leopard Bucks,” which you can purchase from Apple with cash and use them purchase an iPhone.
“Blackwater USA has already taken in more than $1 billion from the public coffers. All in all, that’s not a bad take for Erik Prince, the founder of Blackwater and a Naval Academy dropout who served less time under the colors of the nation, in uniform, than my most recent pair of boots.” Robert Bateman
Why Would Anyone Use Comcast? — We’ve heard they have bandwidth limits, and though they won’t tell you what they are, lots of people have been cut off. Now, we read they are combining with Symantec to filter email, including political content, in a manner that is apparently ripe for exploitation by political opponents.
Scrybe gets venture funding from Adobe, LMKR — “I’ve been on the beta list for some time and have been very impressed with the application they’ve put together.” I have as well, but they’ve taken a pounding for not rolling out quicker. It’s a great app, and hopefully this funding and support from Adobe will allow them to move forward.
The Once and Future Prince · “As recording companies bemoan a crumbling market, Prince is demonstrating that charisma and the willingness to go out and perform are still bankable. He doesn’t have to go multiplatinum — he’s multiplatform.”
“You need a healthy ego to endure the abuse that comes with any sort of success. The trick is to think of your ego as your goofy best friend who lends moral support but doesn’t know shit.” Scott Adams
Google: You ain’t seen nothin’ yet — “They’re looking to come in and completely usurp the telcos at both the business level and the consumer level.”
5 Reasons Not to Drink Bottled Water — “Bottled water is big business. But in terms of sustainability, bottled water is a dry well. It’s costly, wasteful, and distracts from the brass ring of public health: the construction and maintenance of safe municipal water systems.”
For Pornographers, Internet’s Virtues Turn to Vices — Perhaps the ultimate evidence of how the Internet can be disruptive to established businesses, even those who first profited from it.
“I’ve got a battle where I’m trying to put out quality material that matters and I’ve got fans that feel it’s their right to steal it and I’ve got a company that’s so bureaucratic and clumsy and ignorant and behind the times they don’t know what to do, so they rip the people off [...] I have one record left that I owe a major label, then I will never be seen in a situation like this again. If I could do what I want right now, I would put out my next album, you could download it from my site at as high a bit-rate as you want, pay $4 through PayPal.” Trent Reznor, NIN
“I’m like a woman scorned. I’m prepared to continue to kick their fanny until the last day I’m alive on this Earth because they have mistreated too many people.” Sen. Trent Lott, on the insurance industry
“Instead of producing generals today, the Army is producing bureaucrats and managers. America’s private sector is producing visionary leaders like Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Carly Fiorina and Larry Ellison. The military system gave us Tommy Franks and Ricardo Sanchez. Huh?“ Phillip Carter
Strategic incompetence isn’t about having a strategy that fails, but a failure that succeeds — “The inability to grasp selective things can be very helpful in keeping your desk clear of unwanted clutter. I have developed a very agile selective memory across a wide range of nonvalue-added activities.”
