Ex-Blogspotters

Ex-Blogspotters – A mere seven days ago, I offered some Blogspotters unsolicited advice; get a domain and take control of your weblog. I expected that most of them would react like I was asking them to sell their cozy home and move into something they weren’t sure they wanted. Nobody likes moving, especially if you might have to CHMOD permission changes before you can even open your new front door.

But I could hardly have been more pleasantly surprised by the response. Following the lead of Andrew Hofer, who made this transition some time before last weekend’s wailing, we first heard that www.moirabreen.com now exists (although, sadly, we just barely missed having vulcanloveslave.com), and Glenn Reynolds, though he laments the cost, is planning on moving InstantPundit to higher ground. Jeff Jarvis has turned his former Blogspot site into a Buzzmachine. Fred is moving Rantburg from the somewhat confusing name of www.harble.blogspot.com to the clear concise www.rantburg.com

But wait, there’s more! You now longer have to ”chewbacco” to read www.sgtstryker.com. And more: ”COMING SOON: shilohbucher.com!”

While I am most pleasantly surprised at the response, this isn’t about me. It’s about you, having your own ”Piece of the Rock.” I know all of you will eventually be most pleased in your new homes, despite initial grumblings: ”OK PhotoDude. Point taken. But I bet you fall down in some other sphere of life. I’ll bet your garden is BORING! And you couldn’t bake an apple pie to save your life!” I have no garden. I’ve never baked a pie. I can’t swim, either.

There. That should give you some more ammo. I warned you, you will struggle. You will cuss. Just try not to invoke my name too often when you do so. And I promise to update your links this weekend (see, I even created work for myself).

it took me a couple of false-starts and more than a little hair-pulling to get GM up and running on my unix box. in retrospect, it wasn't that hard --- it's just the new thing that always gets me. then there was the design. what a mess of code the templates are. but, with a little work and a significant amount of self-education, things progress. there was also another positive spinoff: my main website got a redesign that really cleaned it up. this web-presence thing is a lot of work. :)

Other than the fact I don't have the skills to run my own Unix box, your experience sounds very much like mine. It's a little of a struggle, but it's a good struggle. "...with a little work and a significant amount of self-education, things progress." ....and that is the story of civilized man (and woman).

have you all checked out www.moveabletype.org ?? i've heard very good things about their software, plus they make an active, ongoing effort to maintain and improve this software - it's created by the dynamic husband/wife duo nick & trina lott. i've installed it once and had no problems at all. they offer guides for installation and a user manual that's simply awesome. check it out!
