Economic Advances

The handover of power may have just happened yesterday, but Iraq is moving towards a democratic economy faster than we ever dreamed. I got proof in my e-mail today:

24A Idrisa Road,
Baghdad.Republic of Iraq.
Salam
Greetings to you in the name of our Allah. I am Mrs Mariam Khalifa a devoted muslim,a new muslim convert of 74 years old after being converted from a christian family by my husband … My husband who is now late was killed during the US/British attack against the president of my country (Sadam Hussain). My late husband was a member of the contract award committee of the republican ministry of petroleum and resources of Iraq under the regime of Sadam Hussein.

After his death,I inherited all his wealth since he has no other next of kin. Since it is now obvious that I may not survive my poor state of health, I have deemed it necessary to leave a legacy on Earth and give a positive account and justification of the life I lived on Earth before the Almighty Allah who will punish all those unbelivers and evil doers that murderd my husband and wants to control the Iraq oil wealth in the name of war against terrorism.

So in order to “punish all those unbelivers,” she wrote to this Southern Baptist American for help. All she wants is my checking account information so she can transfer $35 million. And I get to keep 10%! Why, it’s as good as the offers I get from my good friends in Nigeria!

But being the honest person I am, I think I’m going to have to write her back and suggest she invest that money where it will do the most good: in Iraq. Maybe she could invest in an Internet Cafe, since she seems to have such an interest in bulk e-mail.

When you said “democratic economy” did you mean “capitalistic economy”? Rampant opportunism is not a standard feature of democracy, but it is a feature of capitalism.

Why, you are certainly factually correct. But on the day governmental power was transferred, such accuracy would have completely blown my lede.
