The Daily Whim

Amid Policy Disputes, Qaeda Grows in Pakistan — Infuriating. Seven years later, it’s September 10th all over again: “The story of how Al Qaeda, whose name is Arabic for ‘the base,’ has gained a new haven is in part a story of American accommodation to President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, whose advisers played down the terrorist threat. It is also a story of how the White House shifted its sights, beginning in 2002, from counterterrorism efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan to preparations for the war in Iraq. Just as it had on the day before 9/11, Al Qaeda now has a band of terrorist camps from which to plan and train for attacks against Western targets, including the United States.”

This is frustrating.

Like many, I supported the war in Afghanistan while reserving judgment on Iraq. Years later (keep in mind that we saved the world from fascism in half the time), we’re back where we started.

Literally, where we started, the caves on the Pakistan Afghanistan border that nobody has successfully conquered since we started keeping track of this stuff. The Soviets bankrupted Eastern Europe trying. The Mongols couldn’t do it, and believe me, Dubya is no Ghengis Khan. It just ain’t gonna happen.

We made a terrorist supporting rogue state (with nukes) an ally. We burned our bridges with historical allies. We decimated a civilian population. We spent (and are spending) a gazillion bucks to preserve an oil supply that is only getting more expensive.

Meanwhile, my local bus drivers union is striking. They figure they aren’t getting paid enough to waste time searching buses for bombs that aren’t there. My librarian is grouchy because she has to delete her records daily. The mosque down the street has hired security instead of funding a summer camp.

Woo-hoo, way to go America!
