Falling Together, Falling Apart
I’m in the midst of a busy week with not much time for any real writing here (no, nothing on the “new” Iraq plan, I’ve said it all a long time ago), however, I do have a new Garageband creation.
I tried to construct this one a bit differently. You know those songs you hear now and then that start off … oddly? The rhythm is slightly off, there seem to be distinct parts that don’t match, or seem out of place, and it creates an odd tension … which is suddenly released when everything pulls together and clicks. What sounded chaotic suddenly makes sense.
Well, I don’t know if I quite accomplished that. But I think it at least lives up to the title: Falling Together, Falling Apart (6.75MB, 4:12). Previous tunage available on the downloads page.

I don’t know if it was my new speakers but I had fun listening to various sounds move back and forth and all the separation. Maybe you were doing this before but I just couldn’t hear much through the $2 speakers that I plugged into my Ubuntu box before splurging the $60. Nice.
That is the identical set of speakers that the kind and lovely Miss Melanie bought me off my wish list a couple of years ago. So you’re hearing the same reference I’m using.
And it’s funny, I work on these mostly late at night, so they are largely created and mixed first using headphones. Some good ones. But when I listen to the same work through the Creative speakers, I always have to remix once I’ve heard a fuller range through those fine Creative speakers you now have. I’m sure these things sound like crap through the old came-with-the-system two dollar speakers.
As for the separation and panning, I’ve been playing around with that all along, but lately have been trying to add more texture and layers that may make it more apparent. Layer, Twirl, and Meander had a good bit of that, too.

That’s literally amazing, considering all the speakers that are out there. I spent several days reading reviews, hemming and hawing, before plunking down my $. I just clicked on Layer, Twirl and Meander to hear it on the new speakers. What a difference.
