Layer, Twirl, and Meander

It’s been almost a month since I uploaded one of my Garageband creations. Time has been a bit limited lately. And I’ve played around with three or four “songs” that didn’t seem to be going anywhere, so they never got “finished.” But I’ve got one that is. Barely.

In a continuation of my literalist naming scheme, this one is called “Layer, Twirl, and Meander” (4:08, 5.8MB). It may sound like a law firm, but it’s more of a “production workout.” It doesn’t have a very traditional structure, but by half way through, it’s got a pretty decent groove going.

You can find the rest of my efforts on the download page (but I only recommend the first five on the list).

For what it’s worth, I really liked the rhythm section on this one. Yes, there is a groove there. Keep ‘em coming.

From the Drunken Sailor Economics desk (no, this isn’t a Bush tirade, but uh, well….), a certain Critter in my household is also addic- uh, creating music. Fedex arrives daily. At this point, if you don’t count his bass and the Strat, it’s Drum Frenzy. He has some kind of Yamaha drum computer deal and a whole drum kit type setup with these little bongo drum looking things with rubber tops that end up sounding like the real thing through the Yamaha. I can hear some tap-tap-tapping in there now, so he must be recording a track. I made the mistake of telling him about your MiniMac the other day and I could swear I saw him drooling.

Thanks, and I guess I should be clear … I’m not actually creating the raw percussion in Garageband (I’m trying and practicing, but it’s not easy), these rhythm tracks are pretty much Frankensteined. The low noisy drum sound that starts off the song is actually ripped off from “The Hand That Feeds” by Nine Inch Nails, which Trent Reznor thoughtfully released in Garageband format so I could steal just the drum track. Then I “layered” in other drums via Apple Loops, “twirled” them via some editing, and “meandered” about with the result.

As for the musical “Christmas in November” in your home, I haven’t succumbed to “add-on fever.” Yet. Well, I did buy that Jam Pack, which provided more software instruments. And, yeah, I’ve toyed with the idea of the classic cheap guitar just to get some different sounds into the box.

After all, I have much more skill with a guitar than with a keyboard. I know three chords, and that’s required ante for rock and roll.
