Sunday Mornings with Old Chucklehead

That smiley faced goofball Pat Robertson was on ABC Sunday morning. I guess they bring him on for sheer entertainment value, and he seems happy to oblige. And with today’s mix of religion and politics in the news and on Capitol Hill, well, Pat’s happy as a wallowin’ hog.

And wallow he did, essentially saying that only Christians can be trusted as judges (and Cabinet members, too, if he was President). And begrudgingly, maybe Jews. But specifically, no Muslims.

I tried to grab this as he said it, and I think the quote is “People of faith feel they are under a tyranny and are having their liberty taken from them…” He also said that these activist judges are a greater threat to this country than Al Qaeda, that a “tyranny of oligarchy” is “more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings.” Oh, and Supreme Court Justice Ginsberg is a communist.

Gosh, I know I’ve been busy and distracted lately, but did I miss something in the news? Perhaps several somethings? Are there atheist gangs in black robes shutting down churches, or limiting people’s ability to simply close their eyes and offer a prayer no matter where they might be? I have been busy and preoccupied, but I’d think it that kind of thing would be more prominent in the news.

Fearmongering. Tell people they are losing something enough times, and they’ll be frightfully certain it’s true. But I just went and looked at the Atlanta Yellow Pages, and under “Churches,” I found twenty-two full-size fine-print pages full of them. I’m betting every one of them still has an open door for any soul who wants to enter, and would laugh at the thought that any judge could change that.

Most of them would probably laugh at Ol’ Chuckleheaded Pat Robertson, too.

Yet there he is appearing on the Sunday morning news, 11:00am where I live. At a time most preachers are doing what they consider their most sacred duty, Pat Robertson is busy doing a different kind of preaching.

And that ought to tell you everything you need to know.

Nobody ever elected the man, but he claims to represent the religious right, as does Jerry Falwell, and James Dobson, and other men who seem to spend more time preaching about the political than the spiritual. They all have been pushing Republicans in Congress, especially those with an aspiration to be President in 2008. And many of those Republicans have bent over backwards trying to accomodate them.

What do they get for it? Pat Robertson made it clear he wouldn’t vote for Sen. John McCain for dogcatcher, and he said Sen. Bill Frist was a really nice guy, but not Presidential material. He just wants the Senators to carry his water, not get carried away and forget who really has the power in their party.

Sheesh. Do you think the Republicans will ever figure out they’re better off publicly dumping on the pronouncements of political parasites like Robertson? How hard can it be?
