Demi-Hiatus
A “Demi-Hiatus” sounds a bit like something that therapy might help before surgery is required. But that’s not quite the case here. It’s just fancy talk that means I’m going to take a “posting break,” for maybe a week, or maybe three.
No, I’m not having some deep philosophical crisis about my blog (and if I ever do, somebody please get a sharp pin and pop me), nor am I burnt out. Nothing’s really … wrong. Mainly, it’s simply that I’ve got a fair amount of work coming up that will consume a lot of time. And when I took an unannounced break for two weeks about three years ago, some people thought I was dead.
In addition, I have to deal with the dark cloud inside the silver lining known as TextDrive: I have to move over 300 MB of files, MySQL databases, and associated blogs. That’s a lot of electrons and pixels to have to move from Las Vegas (old server) to Texas (new server) via Atlanta (though Hartsfield Airport is not involved). Then, in addition to moving my Textpattern content over, I get to become one of the first people to install Movable Type 2.6 in an environment designed primarily for PHP/MySQL apps. I’m sure it will eventually work, but … sniff, sniff … I smell guinea pig.
Finally, in looking over the extended calendar, I expect to have a lot to write about in July, August, and September. There’s a handover of power in Iraq, two political conventions, the Olympics, the third anniversary of 9/11, and who knows what else that nobody bothered to put on the public calendar.
So I’ve decided a breather is in order. While it’s still voluntary.
Of course, having said all that, if world events or the voices in my head demand it, I make have to break hiatus. But it will likely be pretty quiet around here, perhaps long enough that I come back as a midsummer night’s dream (“The ‘midsummer night’ is actually the night of the summer solstice. It is said that on Midsummer Night elves and fairies come out in great numbers”).

Once you’re all done moving, Reid, I hope to be able to pick your brain. So if you need any help with the heavy lifting, let me know.
With my brain, the pickins may be slim, but I’ll tell you whatever I can. I assume you’re mostly interested in the MT setup. Someone else in the forums appears to have gotten MT working, so hopefully it isn’t too persnickety.
And as for helping with the heavy lifting, I think you’re dead smack in between my two servers, in Vegas and Texas. Do you know how to hot swap hard drives on servers? Sure would save me a lot of time…
Best of luck with the transition, Reid. Looking forward to seeing you return.
You go have fun. I’ll just be sitting here obsessively refreshing your page…
Have a nice break Dude, but I’m warning you … at this stage, I think you’ll find breaks are way more fun than blogging. That said, when I come back, it will be with textpattern, so you better load up your wishlist.
You always do what Letterman does and run a “best of”. Link to your favorite timeless posts. :)
Reid, did you think to ask Dean to do a server to server file move for you? He can rsync it totally fast.
I missed some of the history – okay, I only check in here once in a while – but why are you staying with MT instead of moving to TextPattern?
dude, taking a break gave me perspective on what I’m doing, but at the time I just thought it was bad luck to have my hard-drives corrupt and the camera pack up. I was wrong.
