Photo Lemmings

Watching the testimony of Condoleeza Rice this morning, they started with a wide shot of the chamber. One of the first things I noticed was the people sitting on the floor in front of the commission members. The ones who crawl on hands and knees, and sit cross legged on the floor while surrounded by suits in chairs.

The photographers (cached: AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

They’d easily tripled in number from the testimony I watched a couple of weeks ago. So you’ve got a gaggle of fifty shooters or so, trying to find some unique angle on things.

Once Rice’s testimony began and the camera was focused on her, I got tickled by the lemming-like line of shooters behind her. It became clear to me, there is something above and behind the panel members that Rice is facing. Whether it is a large round seal or a bank of TV cameras, I don’t know, but I’m sure we’ll see. In dozens of shots. Because each of the photographers moved their lens to a specific spot behind Rice’s head, as though they were “centering” it in some kind of frame … whatever it is above and behind the panel members.

It’s probably nothing much (I’ll post it here later when I find it), just photographers desperate for something different in a visually boring setting. And that’s why it tickled me.

Hey Reid, this might give you an idea. Second row, far left. The only thing I can gather is they shot at a low angle to get US Senate seal in background.

It could be, but that seal seems awfully small for that kind of shot. I’m guessing they might have also simply been going for shots like this where you see Rice in the foreground, and commission chairman Thomas Kean listening intently.

What’s with the “traffic cop” lights in front of Kean? Is that to let Rice know when she should slow down or stop talking? “Whoa, whoa, whoa there – that’s enough outta you, missy. RED MEANS STOP!”

The lights could be like the system the supreme court uses. A white light flashes when the lawyer has five minutes of yak time left. A red light becomes solid and they have to shut up. I think this would be different, but maybe something on the same lines. BTW Reid, I like the new digs!
