Believe All That You Read
Believe All That You Read – I’m really having some problems with e-mail. First, I got this:
From: noreply AT photodude.com
To: reid AT photodude.com
Subject: Email account utilization warning.
Hello user of Photodude.com e-mail server,
Our antivirus software has detected a large ammount of viruses outgoing from your email account, you may use our free anti-virus tool to clean up your computer software.
For more information see the attached file.
Kind regards,
The Photodude.com team http://www.photodude.com
Oh, my. But upon checking (no, not using their attached file), I could find no infection on my system. I assumed it was just an error by ”The Photodude.com team.” What a surprise, since they can’t even spell ”ammount.” Trust me, you just can’t get good help these days.
Then I got another e-mail from them:
Dear user of Photodude.com gateway e-mail server,
Your e-mail account has been temporary disabled because of unauthorized access.
For details see the attached file.
Cheers,
The Photodude.com team http://www.photodude.com
So, I guess my e-mail has been cut off (and they seem really determined to get me to open that attached file). However, don’t tell ”The Photodude.com team,” but I seem to still be able to send and receive mail. I’m sure they’ll catch on to me soon, though.
In a related note, if you send me an e-mail with the subject line ”heya,” be assured I will read it right after I finish properly evaluating the many offers I get to purchase Vi*gra. I figured I might as well catch up on that until the ”Photodude.com team” decides to restore my e-mail priviledges.

I'm sure if you just open that attached file, your email priviledges will be restored immediately. Elaine gets some similar to those, but they're usually from the "ecg.com" team. She hasn't been tempted to open any as yet, and NAV hasn't reported any viruses on her system, but when I ran an online virus checker on her machine it seemed there were 7 or 8 little gems still sitting in her inbox. A year ago when I was trying to switch to Earthlink DSL, it hadn't been hooked up yet, so I tried their dialup service, not thinking that by dialing the modem I was bypassing my firewall router. NAV started going nuts immediately and I hadn't even been on more than a few seconds.
Sadly, two of the idiots at my company fell for this one. However, not only did they open the zip attachment, they had to put in the password (mentioned in the email), and then ran the executable in the zip. Goodness...
