The Karma of Unintended Consequences

Instapundit points out this moral stand: “If you link to ‘Wonkette’ through your blogroll you cannot and will not enjoy, for what that might be worth, a link from The Rittenhouse Review.

This kind of thing is just so … high school. Especially the second time around. But good for lots of traffic, eh?

As I’ve said before, “There’s a high level of inflated self importance in such a delinking. Myself, I’m certain that my little link to anyone is but a snowflake in a blizzard, of no impact at all, added or removed. It’s a shame others think their links are such precious pearls.”

And then there’s the side effects. Remember when Fox sued Al Franken because Bill O’Reilly got his panties in a wad over the book Franken was publishing? Remember how the Fox-initiated ruckus immediately caused the book to shoot to #1 on the best seller list? Remember yesterday when Al Franken tackled a guy he wanted to shut up, but only insured that the guy would get a hundred times the attention he otherwise would have, and that Franken will be hearing from this guy (or his lawyer) for many more months?

In harmony with this karma of unintended consequences, Wonkette has been added to my blogroll.

After reading the above from dustbury.com about how he couldn't find the original post, I went back and looked myself. Sure enough, the proprietor of Rittenhouse who took such a brave stand against all things Wonkette, and then caught copious flack over it, has deleted the entry in question. As if doing so will make all these other entries on other web sites go away, and we can now all pretend he never said such a silly thing. Of course, it's his right to do so on his site. But it brings this whole charade out into the light of day. Master marketer Nick Denton launches a new DC outlet, and in no time, a delinking controversy erupts which results in ... lots more links for Wonkette! So I think it's now time to thank Wonkette, Nick Denton, and the proprietor of Rittenhouse for letting us all participate in their nicely played PR scam. Bravo! <smiley type="text/implied" display="none" />
