Moore Cluelessness

Moore CluelessnessJeff Jarvis notes that Michael Moore was on the Today show this morning, saying, ”’There is no terrorist threat.’ Lester Holt, shocked, says is there not evidence of a terrorist threat just two miles away? Moore says, ’How many people died because of terrorism last year? None.’”

Well, let’s check the list. I guess Australians are not people (August, 2002, 202 dead). Kenyans are not people (Nov., 2002, 16 dead). Saudis are not people (May, 2003, 34 dead). Moroccans are not people (May, 2003, 24 dead). Indonesians are not people (August, 2003, 12 dead).

Gosh, it looks like nearly 300 non-people have been killed by terrorism in the past year or so, and hundreds more injured. This terrorism was caused by other ”non-people” who regularly broadcast their desire and intention to kill more Americans (at least, they show up in my newspaper and on TV, but Mikey may not get those channels). No, they haven’t been able to strike the American homeland in the past year. But isn’t it those on the right who are always accused of not caring what happens in ”little brown countries”? Al Qaeda has always used them as killing grounds, too.

Yet here’s Mikey suggesting these 288 people faced no threat from terrorism this past year. Perhaps they should just quit pretending and rise up from their graves.

Is Mr. Moore that completely ignorant of world events over the past year, or is this just more of the clueless trash he spouts when he’s got a product to promote? One or the other is true, and either option degrades what little credibility the man ever had.

And of course there's that little altercation in Israel: Thanks to Islamic Jihad alone: "...the bombing of 5 June 2002 at the Meggido Junction, which killed 18 Israelis; the bombing of a commuter bus on 21 October 2002, which killed 14 Israelis..." [source] Oh, that's right. Jewish civilians=Nazis and terrorists="freedom fighters". Bleh.

I know what you're saying, but I tried to stick to the incidents attributed to and/or admitted by Al Qaeda. Even Mr. Moore has to admit that Al Qaeda posed enough of a threat to the US to create a huge crater in Lower Manhattan. Perhaps his point is that the War on Terror has been so effective over the past two years that Al Qaeda has been unable to attack the US mainland. Perhaps he is unconciously making the point that the War on Terror has been so effective in that way that he has completely forgotten he was ever at risk! Or .... perhaps he's got a product to peddle coming out this fall, and therefore tries his best to attract whatever attention he can with outrageous statements. Perhaps generating partisan hyperbole is a Good Thing for him, because it puts money in his pocket. I guess each person will have to judge for themselves why someone would say something so blatantly false, and what exactly they have to gain from it.
