We're Number Fifty!

We’re Number Fifty! From the AJC: “The College Board released the 2002-2003 SAT scores this morning and Georgia, for the second year in a row, has the lowest score among all states. Georgia’s average score was 984 out of a possible 1600.”

The national average is 1026, compared to Georgia’s 984. In the city of Atlanta, it’s much worse than that, with an system wide average of 864, and some high schools as low as 713. Dekalb County schools fare slightly better with a system wide average of 928, but the high school a half mile from my home has an average of 861. Fulton County schools average 1049, but the variance in schools is wide, from 794 to 1132 (and the county is massive, stretching 50-60 miles from north to south).

However, if you have kids and want to live inside the Atlanta Perimeter (I-285), the City of Decatur is the place to move, as their average SAT score is 1084, above the national average.

This is not suprising to me. I have a product of the Ga education system as well as am a product. Karma works with Gov't as well as individuals. The GA schools have been "inviting" the "non-over achievers" out of their education for years by telling them they could quit at the age of 17 (without parental consent) in an effort to improve the school's report card under the new rating system by the state. Now their chickens have come home to roost. It's unfortunate - I wonder if our states welfare system will support them all? Bet this would be a great case for a class action suit........ susan

I am a product of a Georgia / metro Atlanta public education system. At the time, our district was among the top ten in the nation and my school was typically one of the top two in the district. It is amazing to see how they have fallen since.

The city of Atlanta is about half of Fulton county. Does that mean that the rest of Fulton county has an average SAT score higher than 1200?
