A Man's Got to Known His Caffeine Limitations

A Man’s Got to Known His Caffeine LimitationsSome things are good to know if you ever have to “push the caffeine envelope.”

“What are some warning signs of a caffeine overdose?”

“People sufering from caffeine overdose can be identified with at least five of the following signs: restlessess, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, flushed face, diuresis, gastrointestinal disturbance, muscle twitching, rambling flow of thought and speech, tachycardia or cardiac arrythmia, periods of exhaustability, and psychomotor agitation.”

Heck, half the people I encounter in an average day display at least five of the signs on that list. Especially that “psychomotor agitation.” I see a lot of that on our highways.

“How much caffeine could be fatal?”

“The LD-50 (lethal dosage that would kill approximately 50% of the population) is 10 grams of oral administration. This is equivalent to approximately 100 cups of coffee, or 50 Vivarin pills. One exceptional case documented survival after ingesting 24 grams of caffeine. The minimum lethal dose of caffeine given intravenously was 3.2 grams.”

Let’s see, 3.2 grams equals about 32 cups of coffee. OK, that’s good to know. Just to be safe, I better drop that sixth pot of the day, and maybe lay off the intravenous administration.

I can do that. Really, I can.

You know, Mountain Dew's supposed to be one of the most highly caffeinated beverages you can drink. I'm just sayin'.

Oh, I'm very aware of it. I usually have to ask myself, "what form of liquid caffeine do I feel like ... warm and brown or cold and green?" Yum.

32 cups = lethal dosage? I might need to do some math, as in, how much caffeine is contained in 12 cups of coffee and (3) 2-liter bottles of coke? Is it possible to balance that out with say, (3) 6-packs of beer?

3.2 grams intravenously was the lowest reported lethal dosage, and that translates to 32 cups. But that person had to be a real lightweight. 12 cups plus 6 liters of Coke ought to be well within a safe dosage. Beer is optional, and has no more real effect than it does when you have a cup of coffee after 32 beers.

let's see In my youth at my peak (my 20s) I would regularly drink 1 12 cup pot of coffee while getting ready for work brew another pot full, fill my 1qt thermos and top off my travel mug have this all gone before noon nurse 2-3 mt dews during the afternoon using them to wash down 3-5 100mg tabs of caffeine (munch some antacid) come home from work and start brewing another potful. I did this 5 days a week for 6years I recall being even worse on the weekends, I have since cut waaay back on my caffeine intake. If they still make It jolt cola claimed to have twice the caffeine of regular soda.
