Confusion Over Status of Geraldo Rivera in Iraq

Confusion Over Status of Geraldo Rivera in Iraq – From Reuters: “...in a report from Iraq where he was about 60 miles from Baghdad with the 101st Airborne Division, Rivera, known for his provocative on-screen style, said all was well and suggested he wasn’t being ejected from the country by the U.S. military for coverage of the war. Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman later told Reuters, however, that Fox News itself had agreed to remove Rivera after the military commander where Rivera was reporting felt that he had ’compromised operational security.’”

“A Fox spokesman said: ’All I can tell you is that he’s still reporting from Iraq.’ Rivera said in his televised report that he did not know where the reports about the alleged security violations came from but accused colleagues, including former employer NBC, of perhaps ’spreading some lies about me.’ [...] ’I would say that he is going to be leaving Iraq,’ added Whitman. ’Fox has talked to us and they have indicated to us that they are going to remove him from the area of operations.’ Whitman, who had earlier said the military was ejecting Rivera, later amended that to Fox agreeing to withdraw the correspondent.”

In addition, I just heard the woman on Fox intro a story by saying something about how “reporters hate to become part of the news,” and then talked solely about Peter Arnett. No mention of Geraldo at all. Nothing on the Fox News site about it, either. The Pentagon is saying Fox has agreed to pull him out, but all Fox’s spokesperson can tell us is that he’s still reporting. And he has been on air since these reports came out.

So, as one of their newscasters might say, what’s the deal with the thing? Why the blackout from Fox on a story about one of their reporters and his alleged misdeeds? They were all over Peter Arnett like big ugly dogs last night. Why not a peep about the Geraldo Debacle?

Is this [a] fair or [b] balanced? Looks like stonewalling to me.

(Gawd, I love turning the tables on the media, even just for fun)

All of the media who betray us are guilty of treason. We should hang them. If that is not acceptable, we should force them to wear armbands that identify them as being traitors so that everyone can be alert for further malfeasance on their part. God bless America and curse those who despise us!

George, methinks you're taking this a bit too seriously. I mean, we're talking about Geraldo Rivera here. He was a running joke long before this latest addition to his resume. At worst, the military saw fit to give him the boot. That's about all the effort it is worth expending. As shown with Peter Arnett, these events tend to be self punishing for media types. Heck, just having an ego the size of Geraldo's is self punishment.

A respectable news agency such as Fox? not living up to their credo? bollocks. ;-)

I agree: There's something puzzling about this story, and the lack of straight answers. Perhaps the military unit he was with was hoping he would give out confidential information, so they would have an excuse to boot him out. He's just so annoying! BTW, the last I heard, (from CNN), Peter Arnett was hired by some London paper, and he is staying in Baghdad.

I think it is hilarious that people are finally realizing that FOX News is doing exactly what they have always done. Telling the news they way 'they' see it. They are fast becoming known as the Republican Party News Network. I agree with George (well at least a bit) those newscasters who slant the news to fit their perspective should have to wear some kind of identifier, letting everyone know that what they are reporting may not always be the truth.

These factions sure can't get their acts together as to what the status of Rivera is. What gives here? Before this this happened I have been a Fox supporter, but now am wondering if I have been led down the primrose path?Just saw Rivera reporting on Fox, saying he was coming from Kuwait. So what does this tell you? Humph, fair and balanced, I ask....

In response to WBeck claiming that Fox News is the Republican Party News Network, you fail to realize that it is not only Fox that has violated the line in reporting unbiased news. CNN is very much the Democratic Party News Network in your method of thinking. In fact there is no real fair and balanced news out there nowadays. The news is reported how all networks see fit and viewers pick and choose what they want to hear and understand/believe. - BUT I digress. As for Geraldo Rivera, I question the crediability of ANY network that hires a post-tabloid, Al Capone hunting, talk-show-having, reporter wannabe. I mean seriously folks, who can honestly say they would believe anything that was reported from that man's mouth or let him report anything this important? Good riddance to him and to Arnett!
