Baby LoJack
Baby LoJack – Yesterday, I was at a local hospital to welcome my new great niece into the world (Morgan Rose). Granted, I don’t spend much time in maternity wards, but I was surprised when the nurse came in to unwrap the swaddled child and said, “I need to make sure the LoJack is in place.”
LoJack? Like, for tracking stolen cars? Yes, the nurse explained, every newborn gets a small transmitter, and if the transmitter gets near an elevator or stairway, a loud alarm goes off, and all exit access is locked.
It sure made a novel impression on me, but it’s apparently not new, and is damned effective: “Cathy reported an 82 percent reduction from infant abductions nationwide over the past five years and credits the drop to increased training of hospital personnel and the greater number of healthcare facilities following the NCMEC’s guidelines and installing access control systems.”

Those pictures are beautiful. Almost - almost - made me long for another baby.
