The PhotoBloggies

The PhotoBloggies – (via Heather) “As many of you are aware, photoblogs were not added in as a category in the bloggies this year. But with a little push from Marc North and a bit of contemplation, I have decided to do my own awards, The Photobloggies.”

“I thought it was important to recognize the amazing work of others in our photoblogging community as it is a fresh and rapid growing sector of the blogosphere.”

Rapidly growing, indeed. Back in September of 2000 when I started Pixel Pile, I managed to scrape together maybe 25 links to people who were doing something similar. Today, PhotoBlogs.org reports (and links) 465 such sites.

While the Bloggies somehow managed to overlook this growing sector, I’m glad Rannie took the initiative to do something about it (just a continuation of the many community related efforts he’s made). Though I’ll likely nominate PixelPile.org for the Community Site category, to me it’s not really about the awards.

It’s about spreading the word, and the traffic (I get my share at this site, so I’m not nominating it). It’s the same reason I started PixelPile.org, the transforming nature of the web has had on photography, and the new talents it brings to the table: “People who might never have even pursued photography if it meant learning darkroom skills, or the constant cost of film and processing. But by the thousands, the light bulb goes off; ’hmm, I’ve got a digital camera, and some web space.” And a brain. And off they go.”

And off you should go, to PhotoBlogs.org. Spend some time just clicking the links on the front page, or on the full list of photoblogs (note, it’s a heavy page), then get ready to make your nominations for the Photobloggies.
