Ice on Mars

Ice reservoirs found on Mars"Water-ice has been found in vast quantities just below the surface across great swathes of the planet Mars [...] Insiders suggest that, partly as a result of this finding, NASA may now commit itself to a manned landing within 20 years."

The significance of this news goes beyond the possibility of life on Mars, past, present, or future. This could be the kick that gets mankind back into manned space exploration. This is no drop in the bucket. "The presence of such a vast amount of ice – if it were to melt it could cover the planet in an ocean at least 500 metres deep (1,640 feet) – will change profoundly the direction of future exploration."

It should be pretty clear to most of us now, the human race needs a lifeboat. For any variety of reasons, from man made disaster to natural calamity, one can see how in the next few decades, Mother Earth might become a most inhospitable place. It would be smart to get busy finding other options.

I am quite sure that In my lifetime the world will be a VERY different place, like you said inhospitable.. Personally, I have no desire to run away to mars.. I;d rather just die like I would naturally.

For many of us, Earth is already an inhospitable place.

Quite possibly the stupidest Peanut Gallery comments I've ever seen. This planet supports nearly 7 billion human beings. Hardly Inhospitable. As for war, famine pestilence and death, hardly the planets fault.

It's not stupid when you know LaVonne's context: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. That's the "for many of us."

Given that the comment was presented with out context, the extremes with which some enviromentalists hold views, and my own ignorance of the existance of MCS, I think I should have some latitude with my presumptions. Even with that, I question the use of the term 'inhospitable' with the Earth in general, where it appears (from a brief glace at the link provided) that MCS is an issue primarily in urban areas. In any case I'll apolgize for being overly harsh in my initial assessment.
