Sea Launch

Sea Launch – For some reason, I find this a fascinating concept. This company will take delivery of a satellite in Long Beach, California, load it onto their 660 foot long ship where it is mated with the rocket assembly (the ship later functions as launch control, with facilities for 240 people), and then placed in a sealed container on board their ”mobile launchpad,” a re-purposed oil platform: ”The vessel is one of the largest semi-submersible, self-propelled vessels in the world at 436 feet long, about 220 wide.”

The two vessels travel to the Equator somewhere in the mid-Pacific, and launch the satellite into any orbit you wish. They did it just the other day.
