Reading Raoul
Fear and Loathing in America : The Brutal Odyssey of an Outlaw Journalist 1968-1976 (Gonzo Letters, V. 2.), by Hunter S. Thompson – ”We’re a nation of pigs & we get what we deserve—- Hee-Haw, Salems, & Wide Track Pontiacs.”—-from one of HST’s letters, May 30, 1970.
And while we’re on the subject of the Good Doctor, he repeatedly uses the word ”Selah” in his letters, and I’ve never been quite sure what it means. So I finally looked it up:
selah \”se-le, -’la\ interjection [Heb selah] (1530)
– a term of uncertain meaning found in the Hebrew text of the Psalms and Habakkuk carried over untranslated into some English versionsNo wonder I didn’t know what it means. People have apparently been using this word, not knowing what it means, for almost 500 years. HST is continuing a long and fine tradition.
Selah.
